Experiencing an upbringing that saw him torn between a mother who loved the blues, and a grandmother who believed the musicians involved were aligned with Satan, director Charles Burnett certainly formed a unique take on the genre. Here he returns to his roots in Mississippi, and re-tells his story as a young boy growing up surrounded by the sounds of blues and gospel. Vintage performances come courtesy of Lightnin' Hopkins, Willie Dixon, Son House, Big Bill Broonzy, and many others.
