YOUNG THUGS - INNOCENT BLOOD: This somewhat autobiographical film, set in director Takashi Miike`s hometown of Osaka, is a coming-of-age story that contains the blood and violence characteristic of the work of this auteur. True to its title, however, the film retains an innocence that sets it apart from much of Miike`s oeuvre. Three friends rob their teacher on the last day of school and set out to find their place in the world. Ryoko becomes employed by a hair salon, while his two friends find careers in law enforcement, of sorts. This fast-paced thriller was based on a novel by Toshikazu Nakaba, and is followed by a sequel, YOUNG THUGS--NOSTALGIA.
YOUNG THUGS - NOSTALGIA: Chosen by controversial cult director Takashi Miike as his favorite film from his own prodigious output, the semi-autobiographical YOUNG THUGS--NOSTALGIA is the sequel to YOUNG THUGS--INNOCENT BLOOD. Again set in Miike`s hometown of Osaka, it follows a young boy poised to abandon his childhood world of reverie for adulthood. He lives with his eccentric family, who pass quickly between violence, dysfunction, humor, and affection. The director`s attachment to the story, characters, and location are evident in this coming-of-age tale, which adds a startlingly touching and personal element to the characteristic Miike bloodshed, making this an emotionally compelling thriller.

The Kite Runner
Hosseini's stunning debut novel starts as an eloquent Afghan version of the American immigrant experience in the late 20th century, but betrayal and redemption come to the forefront when the narrator, a writer, returns to his ravaged homeland to rescue the son of his childhood friend after the boy's parents are shot during the Taliban takeover in the mid '90s. Amir, the son of a well-to-do Kabul merchant, is the first-person narrator, who marries, moves to California and becomes a successful novelist. But he remains haunted by a childhood incident in which he betrayed the trust of his best friend, a Hazara boy named Hassan, who receives a brutal beating from some local bullies. After establishing himself in America, Amir learns that the Taliban have murdered Hassan and his wife, raising questions about the fate of his son, Sohrab.
